Graduate Student, Philosophy
About
As a Ph.D. student at Georgetown, I hope to take full advantage of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics and earn my concentration in bioethics. I began my trek here at GU in the fall of 2009.
Currently my interests in bioethics are vast, but my intellectual and professional commitments lie in social justice and the right to health. I am concerned with a “rooting out” approach where bioethical problems are situated in a larger context of environment, politics, history, and religion. This multifaceted picture is especially helpful in cross-cultural and interfaith approaches to human rights initiatives and policy formation. My ultimate goal is to take steps to uncover systematic prejudice and injustice that keep historically underserved populations marginalized. This goal has several dimensions, such as 1) seeking accurate and appropriate disease classifications, 2) studying the work of universal morality in different cultures, and 3) working on the ground with individuals and organizations that are in the thick of trying to deliver aid and trying to advocate for patients’ rights.
My academic interests also include animal welfare, family ethics, philosophy of biology, jurisprudence, and philosophy of theatre/literature.
In 2008 I graduated summa cum laude with Dual B.A.s in Philosophy and Religion at Florida State University. I pursued an interdisciplinary education by completing three minors: History and Philosophy of Science, English, and Theatre. When I finished at FSU, I was the only person in the university's recent history to write Honors Theses in more than one major.
